Invasion of Poland
1 September 1939. Germany invades; Britain and France declare war two days later.
Fall of France
June 1940. France signs an armistice after six weeks, leaving Britain fighting alone in the west.
Battle of Britain
Summer and autumn 1940. The RAF denies the Luftwaffe air superiority, and the invasion of Britain is shelved.
Operation Barbarossa
22 June 1941. Germany invades the Soviet Union, opening the Eastern Front — the war's largest theatre.
Pearl Harbor
7 December 1941. Japan attacks the US Pacific Fleet; the United States enters the war.
Midway
June 1942. The US sinks four Japanese carriers, turning the Pacific war.
Stalingrad
August 1942 to February 1943. The German Sixth Army is encircled and surrenders; the Eastern Front turns.
El Alamein
October–November 1942. The Allies halt the Axis advance in North Africa.
