Heart. Carditis, cardiomyopathy, tachycardia.
nephr/o and ren/o
Kidney. Nephritis (Greek root), renal artery (Latin root).
hepat/o
Liver. Hepatitis, hepatomegaly.
-itis
Inflammation. Appendicitis, arthritis.
-ectomy
Surgical removal. Appendectomy, nephrectomy.
-ostomy
Creation of an artificial opening. Colostomy, tracheostomy.
-otomy
Cutting into, without creating a permanent opening. Laparotomy.
-emia
A condition of the blood. Anaemia, hyperkalaemia, septicaemia.
brady- / tachy-
Slow / fast. Bradycardia is under 60 bpm, tachycardia over 100.
-plasia vs -trophy
Plasia is a change in cell number, trophy a change in cell size. Hyperplasia adds cells; hypertrophy enlarges them.
peri- / endo- / epi-
Around / within / upon. Pericardium, endocardium, epicardium.
-algia and -dynia
Pain. Neuralgia, myalgia.
