How a syllable is built
Consonant, then vowel, packed into a square block: ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ = 한. A vertical vowel goes to the right of the consonant, a horizontal one underneath.
The ㅇ consonant
Silent at the start of a block — it is a placeholder so a vowel can be written — and "ng" at the end. 앙 is "ang".
Final consonants
At the end of a block ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ are unreleased and come out as k, t, p. 박 is "bak", not "bag".
Aspirated pairs
ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅊ are ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ ㅈ with a puff of air behind them.
Tense consonants
ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ are the doubled letters: the same sound, tightened, with no puff of air.
Why it is learnable in a day
Hangul was designed in 1443 to be taught quickly, and the consonant shapes picture the mouth making the sound. It is an alphabet, not a syllabary — 24 letters, not thousands of characters.
