Superior and inferior vena cava
Return deoxygenated blood from the body into the right atrium.
Right atrium
Receives systemic venous blood and passes it through the tricuspid valve.
Tricuspid valve
Between right atrium and right ventricle. Three cusps.
Right ventricle
Pumps deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary trunk.
Pulmonary arteries
Carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs — the only arteries in the body that do.
Pulmonary veins
Return oxygenated blood to the left atrium — the only veins that carry oxygenated blood.
Mitral (bicuspid) valve
Between left atrium and left ventricle. Two cusps.
Left ventricle
The thickest chamber; pumps oxygenated blood through the aortic valve into the aorta.
Aortic valve
Between left ventricle and aorta. Three semilunar cusps.
Coronary arteries
Branch off the aorta just above the aortic valve and supply the heart muscle itself.
